To ensure every campaign is fair and transparent, municipal elections in British Columbia follow strict campaign financing laws. Here's what you need to know before making a contribution.
Only individuals who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents may make campaign contributions. Organizations, corporations, trade unions, and charities are not permitted to contribute.
Contributors must make donations using their own funds. Contributions cannot be made on behalf of another person, and you cannot be reimbursed for your donation.
The maximum contribution to a local election campaign in British Columbia is $1,429.70 per candidate or elector organization for 2026. This limit is adjusted annually by Elections BC.
Contributions may be made as money, goods, or services provided at fair market value.
Contributions of $100 or more are publicly disclosed by Elections BC, including the contributor's name and the amount contributed, as required by law.
Campaign contributions to municipal candidates are not tax deductible and tax receipts cannot be issued.
All campaign contributions are administered in accordance with the Local Elections Campaign Financing Act (LECFA).
